Nuclear Bombing of Japan by U.S. repented?

Nuclear bombing by the United States the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki terrorist action

The White House acknowledged indirectly that the nuclear bombing by U.S. of
the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 was "an act of hostility against humanity and unjustifiable in any way."

In their Jan 2023 official statement, The White House wrote that
President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. of the United States and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan stated unequivocally that any use of a nuclear weapon by Russia in Ukraine would be an act of hostility against humanity and unjustifiable in any way.

As the only country that used a nuclear weapon so far were the United States (against Japan after the World War II), the statement actually sends the World a message that U.S. repented of that bombing.

Why now?

Respondents suggest three reasons behind this belated repentance.

An Act of Stupidity?

Around 43% of respondents believe that the statement was just an act of stupidity. The White House didn't simply realize what message the joint statement had actually sent to the World.

USA is ready to repeat "the act of hostility against humanity"

Here is a fact that supports the opinion that calling the use of nuclear weapons an "act of hostility against humanity" was a demonstration of cognitive limitations of some U.S. top politicians.

“The United States of America stands firm in its extended deterrence commitment, which involves the full range of US military capabilities, including certainly our nuclear abilities," said US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at a press conference in Seoul on Jan 31, 2023.

He said so less than a month after The White House called use of nuclear weapons an "an act of hostility against humanity and unjustifiable in any way".

Repentance?

Around 2% of respondents believe that the statement is an act of repentance urged by the Doomsday Clock. By acknowledging their "act of hostility against humanity and unjustifiable in any way" indirectly, the United States made the first step towards acknowledging it directly in future.

A Japanese Trick?

Around 55% of respondents believe that the statement was a result of a Japanese trick. Japanese negotiators used some cognitive limitations of their counterparts to trick the U.S. government into acknowledging – indirectly – that the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was "an act of hostility against humanity and unjustifiable in any way."
